PIONEER CITIZEN DEAD

Was Manager of Mammoth CaveHotel For Thirty-five Years
Mr. Henry C. Ganter, a man long known and prominently known in this section of the country and evenafar, died at his home near Mammoth Cave, Wednesday night at ten o'clock, following several monthsof critical illness, caused by heart disease. He was seventy-two years of age. While Mr. Ganter had been sick for some time, he had not been in a dangerous condition till about two months ago.
His father was the late (2.) Mr. Edward Ganter, who was born in Germany, and came to this country many years ago, settling in Glasgow, where he reard a large family of children.The deceased was widely known, mainly through his long association with the Mammoth Cave Hotel, which he made famous. For about thrity[sic]-five years he was in charge of the noted Mammoth Cave Hotel, which was burned to the ground last winter.  His acquaintance embraced practically every section of the United States, and also reached abroad, as many notables had gathered at the cave.  He was born in Glasgow and when a young man was engaged in business here, being a druggist.  Later he moved to Mammoth Cave, where he spent the rest of his days, and where he died. he was a genial, affable man and was as clever as a man could be. He possessed much interesting knowledge of the cave and its travelers and could entertain for hours at a time relating the happy and historical incidents pertaining to this great wonder.  He was a fine old gentleman and many, many, friends will sorrowfully mourn his death.

Surviving him are his wife. Mrs. Lucy Ganter and one brother, (1.)Mr. L. Canter, of this place.

His remains  will
be taken toLouisville Saturday morning, and interred in the Cave Hill Cemetery some time that day.

(2.)  Research indicates that this obit has the wrong father for Henry Charles Ganter.  His father was Joseph Ganter, born in Germany, and a music teacher at the Allen Lodge Female Academy in Glasgow.  We have the letter of payment of unmarked lots for Henry and his wife Lucy in the Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville.
