Samuel served in the 9th Ky. Infantry and was captured at Camp Joe Underwood on Oct., 1861. He was first taken to Bowling Green Jail (the confederacy was occupying Bowling Green where it served as the capitol for a short time). At BG, he contracted measles and became very sick. In Jan. they moved him anyway to a prison in Nashville, where he took Pneumonia and almost died. Later he was transferred to Salisbury, then Newburn N.C., where he would stay for the rest of the Civil War. He told his sons that to survive he was forced to "sit atop a dead horse and scrape the maggots out to get to the "good meat"". |
